Traditionally, interference has been considered a harmful effect in wireless networks. The usual approach is orthogonalizing users via scheduling in time, frequency and/or space of the simultaneous multiple transmissions in order to prevent interference. In this work, it is proposed to investigate possible implementations of a novel method to deal with interference at signal level. This method is called Physical Network Coding and it is based on mixing signals (not bits as in Network Coding) at the nodes, thus embracing interference rather than combating it. In particular our proposed approach is to investigate the implementatioin based on algbraic lattices due to the rich structure that could be used to achieve both diversity and capacity.Professor doe Technical StudiesIDept. of Teleocmunications and Systems Engineering. Wild land fires, especially forest fires, have become increasingly devastating and uncontrollable phenomena, and its management an issue of global importance. Recent climate changes have shown that wild land fires will be a serious challenge in the 21st century. The management of these fires present grave concerns for many governments around the world. Greater flexibility and more agile capabilities within fire management are two challenging research objectives that require the use of new Technologies for information acquisition. The use of Unmanned Aeronautical Vehicles (UAV s) could contribute to provide the right information at the right time from the right place at very low cost. However, despite the excellent advances from the telecommunication and aeronautical field in the design, control and navigation of UAV s, their use as a fire management information support tool requires new models for Conflict Detection/Conflict Resolution (CD/CR) in the air side, new models for resource coordination in the land side and new image processing algorithms to provide reliable information regarding the fire evolution and other relevant information such as people, vegetation, or urban infra-structure that can help the fire management decision making. This research project seeks to integrate the expertise of three different research teams to develop a safe UAV information support tool for fire management. The Phd CSC Research will address the integration of UAV s inside the civil aerial space, focusing the research on the conflict resolution algorithm at strategic, tactical and operational time horizons. d.periodisme@uab.cat@Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicacin, Campus Edificio I, UABICREA PROFESSORInstitute of Environmental Science and Technology. Barcelona, Spainjordonez@santpau.cat.Bichemistry, Molecular Biology and BiomedicineMolecular strategies to inhibit the aggregation and binding to arterial wall proteoglycans of low-density lipoproteins. The first event in atherogenesis is the subendothelial retention of lipoproteins, a process mediated by the binding of LDL to proteoglycans (PGs) of the arterial wall. The fusion of LDL particles is the main mechanism that promotes the union. We have previously reported that a minority of plasma LDL binds with high affinity for PGs. This aggregated and electronegative LDL fraction, called agLDL(-), has two important features. First, it has a high content of apolipoprotein J (apoJ), an extracellular chaperone that binds to aggregated or unfolded proteins and facilitates its clearance. Second, induces fusion of not aggregated LDL in a mechanism similar to amyloidogenesis. This process is mediated by a phospholipase C activity (PLC) associated with agLDL(-). Based on these characteristics we consider two strategies to inhibit the fusion of LDL binding to PGs. The first one focuses on studying the role of apoJ in agLDL (-) and determine how to modulate the processes of fusion, plasma clearance and inflammatory and cytotoxic potential of agLDL(-). The second strategy proposes the use of monoclonal antibodies (mAb). A map of the apoB with 28 mAb made in an earlier draft revealed differences between native LDL and agLDL (-). The 6 mAb with higher affinity to agLDL(-) recognize the extreme C- and N-terminal (3 of them close to a binding site for PGs) and the area of apoB postulated as responsible for PLC activity. These mAb open the possibility of inhibiting in agLDL(-) PLC activity and the processes of fusion and binding to PGs.Civil Servent ProfessorBDpt. Microelectronics and Electronics Systems. Engineering School. "Using human perception to synthesize realistic imagery":There has been a steady increase in the number of applications (from computer-generated movies and games to medical application simulations) that rely in the use of simulated visual imagery to produce realistic environments. However, there is not an agreement on how realistic are these environments perceived by humans and how much rendering is necessary to make a simulation undistinguishable from the "physical" version. Our laboratory has been interested on modelling how human subjects perceive reality, in particular how the human visual system is "deceived" in certain circumstances to see elements that are not physically present in the scene (visual illusions). To that extent we have developed a computational model of visual induction by the human cortex that is capable of predicting how the luminance and chromaticity of the context will influence our perception of every single part of the scene. The success of this model (see Vision Research 48, (2008) 733 751 and Journal of Vision (2010) 10(12):5, 1-24) gives us confidence that it can be reformulated to pr< edict how the surroundings do contribute to our perception of small differences in scenes and thus be applied to the problem of visual discrimination. Furthermore, a visual perception model has been applied to other problems such as predicting visual attention (where people look at) and applications such as image compression (removing information that users cannot see). Our group (http://www.cat.uab.cat/) has been building strength during the last 5 years in this and related areas and now has the necessary expertise to supervise a project that requires skills within both computer science and visual neuroscience. Using current risk stratification strategies, it is still difficult to separate patients with rapidly progressing tumours, which require aggressive treatment, from those with indolent tumours. For this reason, it is a priority to search for markers that are specifically linked to PCa, predicting its behaviour with better reliability than the current criteria presently defining risk. The result would enable more effective treatment decisions for individuals (personalized medicine) and would be of great utility in aiding clinical management of a large patient population. The aim of the current project is to identify miRNA signatures that closely correlate with PCa risk and clinical outcome. For the proposed study, total RNA is available from ~500 urines after prostate massage and from 250 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples. For all patients complete long-term clinical follow-up data is available. After initial discovery studies using next generation sequencing, candidate miRNAs will be verified in independent series of samples using quantitative RT-PCR assays. In a second, independent approach, we will verify a previously discovered panel of 18 miRNAs in urine samples using qRT-PCR. Then, in the preclinical validation stage, our analysis will be extended to larger number of samples and the list of candidates further reduced. Our overall goal by the end of the grant period is to better predict aggressive prostate cancer by identifying clinical biomarkers that ultimately enhance treatment decisions. The use of FFPE tissues and urine as a starting material is attractive because this approach should make biomarkers identified in this way much easier to translate into widespread clinical practice. Finally, the detection of aggressive PCa at an earlier stage will improve PCa prognosis, which will, in turn, help to reduce health care costs.Galianes Hernndez, Manuel+Director of Reparative Therapy of the HeartwDepartment of Cardiac Surgery, University Hospital Vall d'Hebron, Passeig Vall d'Hebron 119-129, 08035 Barcelona, Spainmanuel.galinanes@gmail.comaMechanisms and therapies for the repair of the damaged myocardium. If dark matter consists of weakly interacting particles, with a mass between 100 GeV and several TeV, there is the possibility to detect the primary or secondary gamma rays produced in their annihilation and/or decay at over-density sites, using the present and next generation of gamma-ray observatories (Fermi-LAT and the Cherenkov telescopes MAGIC, H.E.S.S., VERITAS and CTA). Within the present theoretical and experimental landscape, there are realistic chances for the detection and identification of dark matter: this fundamental discovery would be of the utmost scientific importance, with profound implications on our basic view of Nature and, in particular, on fundamental questions regarding Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology. We offer the possibility to perform a PhD thesis on indirect dark matter searches with gamma-ray telescopes. We will develop innovative, sensitive-optimize analysis techniques and apply them in the search for dark matter signals in the data gathered by the MAGIC and CTA telescopes, including some channels so far largely neglected. This shall open a new, wide range of observational opportunities for dark matter searches completely unexplored before, with significant potential for the discovery. Our final aim is to provide the ultimate result in the indirect dark matter searches for the energy range between 100 GeV and several TeV. *Institut de Biotecnologia I de Biomedicinadavid.reverter@uab.cat:Structural Biology. The project aims the integration of epitaxial ferroelectric BaTiO3 with Si(001) using multilayer buffers and its use in devices. Pulsed laser deposition with in-situ RHEED will be used to grow epitaxial BaTiO3 films with the polar axis along the out-of-plane direction. Two applications are targeted. First, BaTiO3 films on Si membranes will be combined with ferromagnetic layers for magnetoelectric response. Second, ultrathin BaTiO3 films will be used to fabricate tunnel junction for giant electroresistance. Highly advanced thin film deposition and characterization techniques will be used in the project. In general, endometrial carcinoma is considered as a good prognostic type of cancer as presents a symptomatology associated to it, which makes it easier to get early diagnosed. Unfortunately, 20% of patients are still diagnosed in advanced stages of the disease, where endometrial cancer has already disseminated through the myometrium. From< a clinical point of view, deep myometrial invasion correlates to more undifferentiated tumors, to lymph-vascular invasion and to node affectation. These patients represents a group with high risk of recurrences, they receive adjuvant treatment after surgery, and define a switch from good responses to the surgery of localized tumors, to a correlation between metastasis and decreased global survival. Our project presents a dualistic approach to pursue a common objective, decrease the number of patients who suffer the consequences of myometrial dissemination. On one hand, we will continue characterizing the early-invasion critical mechanisms of endometrial carcinoma, focusing on ETV5/ERM regulated signaling pathways and its partners to identify therapeutic targets, by high-throughput screening methods both in vitro and in human samples and in vitro functional studies, to finally, evaluate them in orthotopic mouse models. On the other hand, based on high-throughput protein screening tools, we will work to improve the early diagnosis of endometrial cancer, focusing on the discovery and validation of protein molecular markers in minimally invasive samples (i.e. uterine aspirates). The present project has an important clinical impact relying on the control of myometrial dissemination through the therapeutical targets characterization within the critical processes regulated by ETV5/ERM, and the improvement on the early detection of endometrial carcinoma including, among others, important targets of ETV5/ERM. The survival of patients who receive a diagnosis of early-stage disease (IA) together with the control of the mechanisms through the tumor is capable to invade the surrounding tissue will allow the clinical control of endometrial carcinoma dissemination and increase the patients with five-year survival rate at 95%.,Cell Biology and Phisiology Professor at UABBiomedicine and Translational and Pediatrics Oncology Laboratory. (FIS PI11/00045)Our objective is aimed at determining the contribution of CD300 receptors in the pathophysiology of inflammatory demyelinating diseases. We will evaluate some aspects related to the differential expression of CD300 receptors, the presence of plasma soluble isoforms, gene mutations, etc., using samples from patients with multiple sclerosis. Both the functional characterization and the determination of the pattern of expression of CD300 receptors and their ligands in the CNS are essential to determine whether dysfunctions of the mechanisms that regulate the activity of the CD300 receptors are responsible for the pathogenesis of central nervous system demyelinating diseases.pModulation of immune receptors function as a novel therapeutic strategy for acute CNS damage (Marato TV3 110532)Modulation of CD300 receptors will be achieved using gene therapy for receptor overexpression, and available activating fusion proteins. In addition, we will focus on the development of new tools for the modulation of these receptors, including clinically relevant small ligands for the receptors, and the virtual screening of new putative ligands. The neuroprotective potential of targeting these immunoreceptors will be evaluated using neuronal/microglial co-cultures, and three different animal models of acute CNS damage: neonatal hypoxic/ischemic encephalopathy, adult traumatic brain injury and spinal cord damage. Neuroprotective outcome will include neuropathological assesment, protein analysis of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, and behaviouraloutcome Schwartz Navarro, Simomedical associate professor`cibbim-nanomedicine, VHIR, Hospital Vall d'Hebron, passeig Vall d'Hebron 119-129 Barcelona 08035simo.schwartz@vhir.org Biomedicine*Drug delivery systems for cancer treatment6targeted DDS against cancer stem cell in breast tumors5targeted DDS against cancer stem cell in colon tumors"Ramon y Cajal" Research FellowRComputer Science Department, Engineering School, Universitat Autnoma de Barcelonadimos@cvc.uab.es,Computer Science and Artificial IntelligenceOriol.ramos@uab.catCEU (Associate Professor)Ernest.Valveny@uab.catGraph-based visual recognition.
